7 GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT:

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and descriptions outlined by St. Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologica, the seven gifts are as follows

■ WISDOM:

We see God at work in our lives and in the world. For the wise, the wonders of nature, historical events, and the ups and downs of life take on deeper meaning. We see God as our Father, appreciate the dignity of others, and find God in all things.

■ UNDERSTANDING:

In understanding, we comprehend how we need to live as followers of Christ. A person with understanding is not confused by the conflicting messages in our culture about the right way to live. The gift of understanding perfects a person’s speculative reason in the apprehension of truth. It is the gift whereby self-evident principles are known, Aquinas writes.

■ COUNSEL

(Right Judgment): With the gift of counsel/right judgment, we know the difference between right and wrong, and we choose to do what is right. A person with right judgment avoids sin and lives out the values taught by Jesus.

■ FORTITUDE

(Courage): With the gift of fortitude/courage, we overcome our fear and are willing to take risks as a follower of Jesus Christ. A person with courage is willing to stand up for what is right in the sight of God, even if it means accepting rejection, verbal abuse, or physical harm. The gift of courage allows people the firmness of mind that is required both in doing good and in enduring evil.

■ KNOWLEDGE:

With the gift of knowledge, we understand the meaning of God. The gift of knowledge is more than an accumulation of facts.

■ PIETY

(Reverence): With the gift of reverence, sometimes called piety, we have a deep sense of respect for God and the Church. A person with reverence recognizes our total reliance on God and comes before God with humility, trust, and love. Piety is the gift whereby, at the Holy Spirit’s instigation, we pay worship and duty to God as our Father, Aquinas writes.

■ FEAR OF THE LORD

(Wonder and Awe): With the gift of fear of the Lord we are aware of the glory and majesty of God. A person with wonder and awe knows that God is the perfection of all we desire: perfect knowledge, perfect goodness, perfect power, and perfect love.

This gift is described by Aquinas as a fear of separating oneself from God. He describes the gift as a “filial fear,” like a child’s fear of offending his father, rather than a “servile fear,” that is, a fear of punishment.

Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Prov 1:7) because it puts our mindset in correct location with respect to God: we are the finite, dependent creatures, and He is the infinite, all-powerful Creator.

What Are the 12 Fruits of the Holy Spirit?

Most Christians are familiar with the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, piety, fear of the Lord, and fortitude.

These gifts, granted to Christians at their baptism and perfected in the Sacrament of Confirmation, are like virtues: They make the person who possesses them disposed to make proper choices and to do the right thing.

How Do the Fruits of the Holy Spirit Differ From the Gifts of the Holy Spirit?

If the gifts of the Holy Spirit are like virtues, the fruits of the Holy Spirit are the actions that those virtues produce.

Prompted by the Holy Spirit, through the gifts of the Holy Spirit we bear fruit in the form of moral action. In other words, the fruits of the Holy Spirit are works that we can perform only with the aid of the Holy Spirit.

The presence of these fruits is an indication that the Holy Spirit dwells in the Christian believer.

Where Are the Fruits of the Holy Spirit Found in the Bible?

Saint Paul, in the Letter to the Galatians (5:22), lists the fruits of the Holy Spirit. There are two different versions of the text.

A shorter version, commonly used in both Catholic and Protestant Bibles today, lists nine fruits of the Holy Spirit; the longer version, which Saint Jerome used in his Latin translation of the Bible known as the Vulgate, includes three more.

The Vulgate is the official text of the Bible that the Catholic Church uses; for that reason, the Catholic Church has always referred to the 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit.

The 12 Fruits of the Holy Spirit:

1.Charity

2.Joy

3.Peace

4.Patience

5.Kindness

6.Goodness

7.Generosity

8.Gentleness

9.Faithfulness

10.Modesty

11.Self Control

12.Chastity

● Charity (or Love)

Charity is the love of God and of neighbor, without any thought of receiving something in return. It is not a “warm and fuzzy” feeling, however; charity is expressed in concrete action toward God and our fellow man.

● Joy

Joy isn’t emotional, in the sense that we commonly think of joy; rather, it is the state of being undisturbed by the negative things in life.

● Peace

Peace is a tranquility in our soul that comes from relying on God. Rather than getting caught up in anxiety for the future, Christians, through the prompting of the Holy Spirit, trusts God to provide for them.

● Patience

Patience is the ability to bear the imperfections of other people, through a knowledge of our own imperfections and our need for God’s mercy and forgiveness.

● Benignity (or Kindness)

Kindness is the willingness to give to others above and beyond what we own them.

● Goodness

Goodness is the avoidance of evil and the embrace of what’s right, even at the expense of one’s earthly fame and fortune.

● Longanimity
(or Long-Suffering)

Longanimity is patience under provocation. While patience is properly directed at other’s faults, to be long-suffering is to endure quietly the attacks of others.

● Mildness (or Gentleness)

To be mild in behavior is to be forgiving rather than angry, gracious rather than vengeful. The gentle person is meek; like Christ Himself, Who said that “I am gentle and humble of heart” (Matthew 11:29) he does not insist on having his own way but yields to others for the sake of the Kingdom of God.

● Faith

Faith, as a fruit of the Holy Spirit, means living our life in accordance with God’s will at all times.

● Modesty

Being modest means humbling yourself, acknowledging that any of your successes, achievements, talents, or merits are not truly your own but gifts from God.

● Continence

Continence is self-control or temperance. It does not mean denying oneself what one needs or even necessarily what one wants (so long as what one wants is something good); rather, it is the exercise of moderation in all things.

● Chastity

Chastity is the submission of physical desire to right reason, subjugating it to one’s spiritual nature. Chastity means indulging our physical desires only within the appropriate contexts—for instance, engaging in sexual activity only within marriage

The Holy Spirit Chaplet
By Blessed Elena Guerra

This prayer to the Holy Spirit originated with Pope Leo XIII. In 1895 he exhorted all Catholics to devoutly make this Holy Spirit Novena, suggesting a special formula of prayer: “Send forth your Spirit and renew the world.” With this in mind, in 1896 Blessed Elena Guerra, “the Holy Spirit Apostle of modern times”, composed these invocations to ask the Holy Spirit for the grace of a New Pentecost, which renews the face of the earth.

Chaplet: (Sing verses of Abba Father Hymn (2) through the chaplet)
‘O God, come to my assistance, O Lord, make haste to help me. Glory be to the Father…’
(In each mystery ask for a gift of the Holy Spirit)

The seven mysteries invoking the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

1 – L. Come, O Spirit of Wisdom, detach us from earthly things and infuse in us a love and taste of heavenly things. Pause

After each Mystery pray:

“Father, in the Name of Jesus, send forth your Spirit and renew the world.” (x7)

And conclude with:

“O Mary, who by the work of the Holy Spirit, conceived the Savior, pray for us.”

2 – L. Come, O Spirit of Understanding, enlighten our minds with the light of your eternal truth and the riches of holy thoughts

Father… (x7) O Mary, …

3 – L. Come, O Spirit of Counsel, make us docile to your inspirations and guide us in the way of salvation.

4 – L. Come, O Spirit of Fortitude, and give us strength, constancy and victory in the battle against our spiritual enemies.

5 – L. Come, O Spirit of Knowledge, be the Master of our souls and help us to put into practice Your teachings.

6 – L. Come, O Spirit of Piety, come to live in our heart to possess and sanctify all of our affections.

7 – L. Come, O Spirit of the Fear of the Lord, reign over our will and make us always disposed to suffer every evil rather than to sin.

Sing Hymns of praise

Invocation to Mary:

L. O most pure Virgin Mary, by your Immaculate Conception you were made a chosen tabernacle of Divinity by the Holy Spirit. Pray for us.

R. May the Divine Paraclete come soon to renew the face of the earth. Hail Mary, full of grace…

L. O most pure Virgin Mary, by the Mystery of the Incarnation you became true Mother of God by the Holy Spirit. Pray for us.

R. May the Divine Paraclete come soon to renew the face of the earth. Hail Mary, full of grace…

L. O most pure Virgin Mary, persevering in prayer with the Apostles in the Upper Room, you were abundantly inflamed by the Holy Spirit. Pray for us:
R. May the Divine Paraclete come soon to renew the face of the earth. Hail Mary, full of grace…

All – Let us pray:

Send Your Spirit, Lord, and transform us interiorly with your gifts. Create in us a new heart that we may please you and be conformed to your will. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

We pray for our Parish priest (name) and all the clergy and for Vocations to the priesthood:
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be

All. O my Jesus, I beg you on behalf of the whole Church, give us holy priests. You yourself maintain them in Holiness. O Divine and Great High Priest, may the power of your mercy accompany them everywhere and protect them from the devil’s traps and snares, which are continually being set for the souls of priests. May the power of your mercy, O Lord, shatter and bring to naught all that might tarnish the sanctity of priests, for you can
do all things. (“Prayer of St Faustina” from her Diary, 1052)

We bring our own prayer intentions to the Lord, Spoken or in the silence of your heart.
Glory be to the father… (x3)

Act of Consecration to the Holy Spirit

O HOLY GHOST: Divine Spirit of light and love. I consecrate to Thee my understanding, my heart and my will, my whole being, for time and eternity. May my understanding be always submissive to Thy heavenly inspirations and the teachings of the Catholic Church, of which you are the Infallible Guide. May my heart be ever inflamed with love of God and of my neighbor. May my will be ever conformed to the Divine will, and may my whole life be a faithful imitation of the life and virtues of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to Whom, with the Father and Thee, be honor and glory forever. Amen.

1.  Prayer to the Holy Spirit

O, Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul , . . I adore You.  Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me.

Tell me what I should do . . . give me Your orders.

I promise to submit myself to all that You desire of me and to accept all that You permit to happen to me.  Let me only know Your will.

2.  A Secret of Sanctity

I am going to reveal to you a secret of sanctity and happiness.  If every day during five minutes, you will keep your imagination quiet, shut your eyes to all the things of sense, and close your ears to all the sounds of earth, so as to be able to withdraw into the sanctuary of your baptized soul, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit, speaking there to that Holy Spirit saying:

O Holy Spirit, soul of my soul, I adore You.  Enlighten, guide, strength, and console me.  Tell me what I ought to do and command me to do it.  I promise to be submissive in everything that You permit to happen to me, only show me what is Your will.

If you do this, your life will pass happily and serenely.  Consolation will abound even in the midst of troubles.  Grace will be given in proportion to the trial as well as strength to bear it, bringing you to the gates of Paradise full of merit.

This submission to the Holy Spirit is the Secret of Sanctity.
Cardinal Mercier

Counsel, that I may always choose the proper way;
Fortitude, that I may remain faithful to You under the pressure of temptation;
Knowledge, that I may always be aware of the ways of God;
Piety, that I may revered You in all I do, think, or say;

11.  Prayer to the Holy Spirit

O Holy Spirit, enkindle in our hearts the fire of your love.

Release upon our Church, the diverse gifts of your Spirit.  Grant that they may be received by open hearts, prepared and willing to cultivate these charisms, given to all believers, each unique, each important in service to the Body of Christ.

Bless our efforts in community with the peace, love, and the joy of your Spirit, unity in diversity, as we build up your Church for the sole purpose of your greater glory, in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

12.  Act of Consecration to the Holy Spirit

On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer myself, soul and body to You, Eternal Spirit of God.  I adore the brightness of Your purity, the unerring keenness of Your justice, and the might of Your love.  You are the Strength and Light of my soul.  In You I live and move and am.

I desire ever to grieve You by unfaithfulness to grace, and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against You.  Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light and listen to Your voice and follow Your gracious inspirations.

I cling to You and give myself to You and ask You by Your compassion to watch over me in my weakness.  Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore You, Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, so to keep me in Your grace that I may never sin against You.

Give me grace O Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Father and the Son, to say to You always and everywhere, “Speak Lord for Your servant is listening.”  Amen.

 13.  Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

O Lord Jesus Christ, Who, before ascending into heaven did promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish Your work in the souls of Your Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me that He may perfect in my soul the work of Your grace and Your love.

Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal / the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth / the Spirit of Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven / the Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with You and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation / the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints / the Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable / the Spirit of Fear of the Lord that I may be filled with the loving reverence towards God and may dread in any way to displease Him.

16.  Prayer for Vocations

O Holy Spirit we ask you to descend on the Christian youth of our land, so as to inspire them with the Spirit of sacrifice and love, and to give them the courage to accept the challenge.

May Your Spirit of Piety arouse in them zeal for souls; may Your Spirit of Fortitude give them the strength to listen to your voice; may your Spirit of Counsel guide them to a true vocation; may Your Spirit of knowledge make them realize the truth of the words of Holy Scripture, “He who causes a sinner to be converted from the error of his way, shall save his soul”; may Your Spirit of Wisdom point out to them the nobility of Your service.
