Introduction

The Rosary is a school, that is, a method of prayer for all times and seasons. For many centuries, Catholics have turned to the Rosary to learn the Gospel, to contemplate the face of Christ in their ordinary lives, but also during times of conflict and danger. As Pope Benedict XVI said in his address to the priests, deacons and seminarians of Brazil, in the Rosary we find “…the divine Comforter seeks to initiate us in the knowledge of Christ that issues forth from the clear source of the Gospel text. For her part, the Church of the third millennium proposes to offer Christians the capacity for ‘knowledge—according to the words of Saint Paul—of God’s mystery, of Christ, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge’ (Colossians 2:2-3). Mary, Most Holy, the pure and immaculate Virgin, is for us a school of faith destined to guide us and give us strength on the path that leads us to the Creator of Heaven and Earth.” How important, then, it is to be in the School of Mary!

In his Apostolic Letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariae (2002), Pope John Paul II exhorted us to pray the Rosary for peace and for the family. His words are significant for us to reflect upon here:

A number of historical circumstances also make a revival of the Rosary quite timely. First of all, the need to implore from God the gift of peace. The Rosary has many times been proposed by my predecessors and myself as a prayer for peace. At the start of a millennium which began with the terrifying attacks of 11 September 2001, a millennium which witnesses every day innumerous parts of the world fresh scenes of bloodshed and violence, to rediscover the Rosary means to immerse oneself in contemplation of the

mystery of Christ who “is our peace”, since he made “the two of us one, and broke down the dividing wall of hostility” (Ephesians 2:14). Consequently, one cannot recite the Rosary without feeling caught up in a clear commitment to advancing peace, especially in the land of Jesus, still so sorely afflicted and so close to the heart of every Christian.

A similar need for commitment and prayer arises in relation to another critical contemporary issue: the family, the primary cell of society, increasingly menaced by forces of disintegration on both the ideological and practical planes, so as to make us fear for the future of this fundamental and indispensable institution and, with it, for the future of society as a whole. The revival of the Rosary in Christian families, within the context of a broader pastoral ministry to the family, will be an effective aid to countering the devastating effects of this crisis typical of our age (6).

A custom for those praying the Rosary is to meditate on each of the Mysteries in silence, either before or while they recite the prayers of each decade. The following pages contain collections of verses from the sacred Scriptures, with ten verses given for each decade of the Rosary. It is suggested that these verses be recited aloud, one before each “Hail Mary.” The verses given for each decade correspond to the Mystery being recalled, and stress the fidelity and strength of Christ, the Prince of Peace.

• Announce the Second Mystery and repeat steps 4-6 above until all five decades are prayed.

The Five Joyful Mysteries

THE FIRST JOYFUL MYSTERY

THE ANNUNCIATION

1. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.

(Is 9:2)

• Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel.

(Is 7:14)

• Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other. Faithfulness will spring from the earth, and righteousness look down from heaven.

THE VISITATION

THE NATIVITY

THE FINDING OF JESUS IN THE TEMPLE

• After three days they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

THE FIRST LUMINOUS MYSTERY

THE BAPTISM IN THE JORDAN

1. Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is to pass over before you into the Jordan.

• When Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened, and [John] saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.

THE SECOND LUMINOUS MYSTERY

THE MANIFESTATION AT THE WEDDING OF CANA

1. “A man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one.” This is a great mystery, and it refers to Christ and the Church.

(Eph 5:31-32*)

• When the wine failed, the Mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”

(Jn 2:3)

• Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, “Every jar shall be filled with wine.”

(Jer 13:12)

• And the royal wine was lavished according to the bounty of the king.

(Est 1:7)

• The steward of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first…; but you have kept the good wine until now.”

(Jn 2:9-10)

• This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

(Jn 2:11)

• With great delight I sat in his shadow, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me in to the wine cellar, and his banner over me was love.

• The Lord of Hosts will make for all peoples a feast of fat things, a feast of wine on the lees, well refined.

THE PREACHING OF THE KINGDOM AND OF CONVERSION

1. The unfolding of thy words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.

• How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good tidings, who publishes peace, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”

THE TRANSFIGURATION

1. And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked towards the wilderness and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.

(Ex 16:10)

• Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

(Ex 40:34)

• Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.

(Mk 9:2)

• And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light.

(Mt 17:2)

• Philip found Nathaniel and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

1. When your children say to you, “What do you mean by this service?” you shall say, “It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s passover.”

The Five Sorrowful Mysteries

THE FIRST SORROWFUL MYSTERY

THE AGONY IN THE GARDEN

1. Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.”

(Mt 26:38)

• My son, if you come forward to serve the Lord, prepare yourself for temptation.

(Sir 2:1)

• My heart is in anguish within me, the terrors of death have fallen upon me. Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me.

• My anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain! Oh, the walls of my heart! My heart is beating wildly; I cannot keep silent; for I hear the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.

• Give heed to me, O Lord, and hearken to my plea. Is evil a recompense for good? Yet they have dug a pit for my life. Remember how I stood before thee to speak good for them, to turn away thy wrath from them.

THE SCOURGING AT THE PILLAR

1. They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barrabbas!” Now Barrabbas was a robber. Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.

• Let us test him with insult and torture, that we may find out how gentle he is, and make trial of his forbearance.

THE FOURTH SORROWFUL MYSTERY

THE CARRYING OF THE CROSS

1. And Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering, and laid it upon his son.

• With a yoke on our necks we are hard driven; we are weary, we are given no rest. Young men are compelled to grind at the mill; and boys stagger under loads of wood.

(Lam 5:5, 13)

• He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.

• Surely he has borne our grief and carried our sorrows.

• The precious sons of Zion, worth their weight in fine gold, how they are reckoned as earthen pots, the work of a potter’s hands.

THE CRUCIFIXION AND DEATH OF THE LORD

1. And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

• The enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary. Thy foes have roared in the midst of thy holy place.

• When Jesus saw his Mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your Mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

THE FIRST GLORIOUS MYSTERY

THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST FROM THE DEAD

1. Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered; let those who hate him flee before him!

(Ps 68:1)

• Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(Mt 5:4)

• Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.

• So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

• Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.

• Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.

THE SECOND GLORIOUS MYSTERY

THE ASCENSION OF CHRIST INTO HEAVEN

1. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. And lo, I am with you always, until the end of time.

• Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.

(Jn 14:1-2)

• Here we have no lasting city, but we seek a city that is to come.

• Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession.

(Heb 4:14)

• For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

• Let us then with confidence approach the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

(Heb 4:16)

• For Christ has entered, not into a sanctuary made with hands, a copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.

• [Therefore] I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way.

THE THIRD GLORIOUS MYSTERY

THE DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. And I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Paraclete, to be with you for ever, even the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive.

(Jn 14:16-17)

• All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and his brethren.

(Acts 1:14)

• By one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, Jews or Greeks, slaves or free, and all were made to drink of the one Spirit.

(1 Cor 12:13)

• Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the holy ones.

(Eph 6:18)

• The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

(Gal 5:22-23)

• And the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of fortitude, a spirit of

knowledge and of piety, and he shall be filled with the spirit of the fear of the Lord.

• Wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits.

(Jas 3:17)

• For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of sonship. When we cry, Abba! Father!, it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

• We know that the whole creation groans and is in travail, even until now. And not only creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

1. The Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words.

THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY INTO HEAVEN

1. My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.

• He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly.

• My beloved speaks and says to me, “Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away; for lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone.”

• What is that coming up from the wilderness, like a column of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all the fragrant powders of the merchant? Behold, it is the litter of Solomon.

THE CORONATION OF MARY AS QUEEN OF HEAVEN & EARTH

1. Who is that coming up from the wilderness, leaning upon her Beloved?

(Song 8:5)

• Do not fear, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive and bear a Son, and you shall call his name Jesus,… and of his kingdom there will be no end.

(Lk 1:30-33)

• Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud voice, “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb! But who am I, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”

(Lk 1:41-42)

• His Mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

• O daughter, you are blessed by the Most High God above all women on earth.             Your hope will never depart from the hearts of
